What is Judo ?

Judo is many things to different people. To some it is a sport, an art, a craft, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat, and a way of life.

Judo is unique in that people of all ages, sexes, and abilities can participate together in learning and practicing the sport. Judo is an inexpensive, year-round activity, that appeals to people from all walks of life and ages.

An attitude of seriousness and respectfulness is necessary to progress towards understanding the “Maximum-efficient use of energy” and “Mutual welfare and benefit of practitioners” – two basic principles of Judo.

Judo was founded in 1882 in Japan by Dr. Jigoro Kano, who modified the more dangerous techniques in ju-jitsu and developed Judo from a martial art into an Olympic sport. He also gave Judo a physical education emphasis and a strong moral orientation.

How will your child benefit from Judo ?

  • Fitnessjudo is a complete form of exercise, keeping your child healthy and active
  • Coordinationjudo techniques improve body posture, balance and reaction, developing athletic ability
  • Respectjudo will teach your child to work with others and be mindful of their well-being
  • Self-Controljudo will help your child understand the meaning of success and also failure
  • Concentrationjudo training improves attention spans, which will help your child focus better at home and in school
  • Perseverancejudo makes you a problem-solver and your child will develop their ability to overcome obstacles both as an individual and in a group
  • Discipline – the organization and tradition of the sport of judo will naturally assist your child to improve self-discipline
  • Couragejudo training helps overcome fear and anxiety, inspiring and building your child’s confidence on and off the mat

Judo is truly a sport like no other

Combine all the advantages of doing youth sport and then add discipline, focus and perseverance. Judo will teach your child life skills, giving them the tools to achieve their goals and lifelong success.

Learning how to set, pursue and achieve goals is important in sport irrespective of ability but it is equally important to learn how to respond when that goal is not met. Winning is not only about gold medals; we prepare kids for their journey as life-long learners in two ways, by experiencing success on the judo mat and success off the mat, applying the life lessons they have learned doing judo!
