  • Black Belt— Nidan
KwangYu Lee began practicing Judo in 2016 while preparing to write his Ph.D. dissertation. He recognized the need for an outlet to channel his negative emotions, which were hindering his progress in life. From his very first day at South Mountain Martial Art in NJ, he fell in love with Judo and Jiu Jitsu.
In 2019, under the guidance of his sensei, Dayn DeRose, he earned his first-degree black belt in both Judo and Jiu Jitsu. By 2023, he had achieved the second-degree black belt in Judo. What he appreciates most about Judo is its ability to transform negative emotions—when disciplined and structured—into something beneficial for both oneself and others. In Jiu Jitsu, he values the principle that skill surpasses power.
Outside the dojo, KwangYu serves as an ordained pastor in full connection with the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is also a certified psychoanalyst in NJ and a guest lecturer and professor specializing in psychology and religion—pastoral care and counseling.
He continues to practice both martial arts, striving to integrate their philosophy into his life—the way of gentleness and the skill of gentleness.
