Frequently Asked Questions

  • What should I bring to my first class?
  • If you have an existing judogi or jiujitsu uniform, feel free to wear that, along with the rank belt you have earned (we have no brand or color requirements, but students MUST have a white judogi for competitions)
  • If you do not have a uniform, we have loaner uniforms available
  • Bring sandals or flip flops to wear when you are not on the mats
  • A water bottle, as we only have a bottle filling station, not a regular drinking fountain
  • Athletic tape if needed
  • What can I expect for my first class?
  • If possible, arrive to the dojo 15-20 minutes early
  • Once you have arrived at the dojo, one of the instructors will meet with you to complete the Gymdesk process - creating a profile and completing the required waivers
  • After you have changed into your judogi, join us on the tatami at the end of the lineup (the instructors will assist you) to bow in before class
  • After bowing in, class begins with announcements, then a warmup
  • After warming up, you will be paired with an instructor or senior student to practice break falling
  • During the technique portion of the class, you will be paired with either an instructor or senior student to learn the technique, or an alternate technique depending on skill level
  • Once the technique portion has completed, we will focus on randori
  • For randori, you will only work with an instructor or senior student in a controlled environment
  • Randori is optional for all students - do not feel pressured to participate in randori
